Sabbath Rest and Rising Tension

Preacher: Malachi Tresler Series: The Gospel of John Scripture: John 5:1–47

Malachi Tresler. John 5:1-47 -- "Joyfully Set Your Hope on the God-Man, the Eternal Life-Giver and Judge."

1. Receive The Merciful God-Man With Joy, Not Contempt (v1-18)
Jesus' healing on the Sabbath demonstrates His divine authority and initiation of the Messianic age, challenging legalistic views of the Sabbath.

2. The Authority to Grant Life and Execute Judgment Has Been Delegated to the God-Man (v19-30)
Jesus—both God and man—possesses the authority to grant life and execute judgment, a role established in His divine relation to the Father and His humanity.

3. The Scriptures Should Lead Us to Rest In Jesus (v31-47)
The identity of Jesus is affirmed by the Father through the teachings of the Scriptures, complemented by the testimony of John the Baptist and the works performed by Jesus Himself. Misunderstand the Scriptures' emphasis of relying upon divine, sovereign grace for salvation, leads to a rejection of Jesus.

We are called to joyfully set our hope on Jesus, recognizing Him as the giver of eternal life and our righteous judge. Our salvation lies not in our efforts but in resting in the finished work of Christ. Let's embrace this truth, freeing ourselves from the burden of works-righteousness and living in the grace and truth revealed in Jesus Christ.
